罪恶的犯人，是谁，给予你人类应有的权利，用上帝的子弹去结束一位警官？

（短暂的沉默）该怎么向您讲述，哎，如果我能再长十个脑袋一百张嘴，也许会将这件难以叙述的事情讲的清清楚楚。怎么说，我杀的是警长，而不是你们说的副警长。真的，我是向警长开的枪，而不是副警长！从小成长的城镇，如今连我孤独的身影都不得容下，街道拐角处、竖立的路灯下，不为人知的花园深处到处都是逮捕我的人们，就连墙上的通告都在时刻提醒我，是的，他们要将我绳之以法，他们说我杀了副警长，他们为了副警长的生命要将我逮捕！可是我说，我向警长开枪是为了自卫，我发誓我杀的是警长，但是他们说这便是死罪。

狡辩的犯人，别以为这些敷衍之词能在高尚的法庭上能感动脆弱的人们，别以为故意转移话题能在智慧的人们中吸引半点注意，别以为那些含糊语气能在真实的事实中能铿锵有力，你还有什么言辞，尽管的讲出来，在还能发出声音之时吧！

还能说什么呢，就让我用最后的清白洗净我的一言一语吧。至今我都没有明白，就像白云不知自己是在海洋的上方还是下方一样，警长John Brown一直深深的恨着我。如此的疑问伴随着我，甚至到今日，回想到我在院中播种，他都会默默念叨，要将它们杀死在萌芽之中，他说过将其结束在开始的时刻。没想到就在那一天，自由懒散比往日更让人难以平静，我必须到城镇外面呼吸下新鲜的空气。突然，警长John Brown出现在我的面前，没有任何预兆，似一声闷雷打在烦躁的都市里，他拔出了手枪，向我瞄准。啊，你们没法想象，你们怎么能想象，我也掏出手枪，向他开了枪。是的，此时此刻，我还需要什么感人的言辞，我只想用真相向明目的你们表述，如果我有罪，我愿抵罪。
（微微的停顿，轻声道）
我杀的是警长，而不是副警长，你们要明白，是警长，我没有杀副警长！现在的我轻松舒坦，这样的感觉也越来越少了，一切该是如何便是如何。我想，木桶每天都装满水，总有一天它也会从底部漏出；我想，无论一张纸有多大多结实，它也没有能力去包住熊熊火焰。
（激动，有些颤抖）

I SHOT THE SHERIFF原创来自于雷鬼之父BOB MARLEY，作者曾表述这首歌曲的主题就是“公平”。其中的sheriff，代替了police和doctor两个词，前者是为政府与审查制度的问题，后者就MARLEY女友说是MARLEY发对她使用避孕药（birth control pills）。
这首歌较为著名的翻唱来自于ERIC CLAPTON，其中有很长时间的吉他solo，将歌曲融入乐soft rock和雷鬼，超级赞。也是我接触这首歌的原因，同时让我想起那句话“牛人之所以牛，不是他有多厉害，而是他的辛酸”，只有不断的练习，才能有所成就。相对于原版，就吉他solo更为出色，而原版能给乐者更多感受，例如I & shot的反复使用，有种无奈与冲动，从而给歌曲更多的乐趣感（这便是雷鬼）。
还有来自WARREN G的版本，这个从全新的方式，即用rap来讲述这段故事，更改了歌词，也是很不错，但我没有太多深入的了解。
