Horse Latitudes

When the still sea conspires an armor

And her sullen and aborted

Currents breed tiny monsters

True sailing is dead!

Awkward instant

And the first animal is jettisoned

Legs furiously pumping

Their stiff green gallop

And heads bob up

Poise

Delicate

Pause

Consent

In mute nostril agony

Carefully refined

And sealed over

While some sources claim that this excerpt was written by Nostradamus in his prophetical work, Centuries, no volume of the centuries has had this in it.

According to the popular Morrison/Doors biographer, Jerry Hopkins, the poem was written when Jim was still in high school:

“He filled up notebooks with poems. Some of them survived, becoming songs years later when he sang with the Doors. One was about horses being jettisoned from sailing ships becalmed in the Sargasso Sea.” (The Lizard King: The Essential Jim Morrison, pg 40).

The song itself concerns what is known as the phenomenon concerning the Horse Latitudes, located between 30 and 35 degrees in the subtropics, in which the wind would mysteriously disappear from Spanish sails, forcing the sailors to jettison cargo in a bid to become lighter.

Horse Latitudes

The sea turning on the sailors is reflected in the line “when the still sea conspires an armour”, as the sea becomes a hardened defence, much like armour.

  • 大海与海员的斗争折射在诗句“when the still sea conspires an armour”,放佛海变成一个坚韧的守护者,身披不破装甲。

关于’Horse Latitudes’

“Horse Latitudes” I wrote when I was in high school. I kept a lot of notebooks through high school and college, and then when I left school, for some dumb reason – maybe it was wise – I threw them all away…I wrote in those books night after night. But maybe if I’d never thrown them away I’d never have written anything original – because they were mainly accumulations of things that I’d read or heard, like quotes from books. I think if I’d never gotten rid of them I’d never be free.”

Jim Morrison – Los Angeles

  • “Horse Latitudes”

  • 其一听者是观众,看着听着舞台上所发生的一切;
  • 其二是船上的人们,他们也是观众,只不过他们的舞台是正在下沉的刚出生的马;
